And why not some MCR?!! MCR's fandom is crazed and utterly dedicated - and generally young (20s/30s). One interesting thing I've never seen anyone discuss is that a chunk of that fanbase is interested in Adam. (those who don't see him as infringing on Gerard's turf - cause Gerard Way's been putting the 'T' in theatrical (in his own way) since 2001:)
WARNING: If lyric allusions to school shootings/violence bother you, might wanna pass.
I was reminded this week of an artist who has a truly beautiful voice and was a natural instinctive interpreter of songs. Sadly she has been dead for a number of years (she died at 33 in 1996) but the small body of work she released stands as testament to her extraordinary talent.
Eva Cassidy
Almost completely unknown outside of her home turf of Washington D.C. she gained posthumous acclaim when a British tourist purchased one of her CD's and talked a local radio station in Britain to play it. It became a bestseller and crossed over to also achieve US success. Hers is a fascinating and tragic story.
She is perhaps best known for her interpretation of song Songbird (name of CD that garnered her acclaim). But she also did a beautiful sensitive version of Fields of Gold that reportedly bought Sting to tears when he heard it. Enjoy.
And a rare shaky live performance video of her singing Over the Rainbow that was played on Britains top of the pops and garnered the biggest response they had ever seen:
Some singers voices cause me to have to stop what I am doing. Some bring me to tears. Some feed my soul. Eva and Adam... and a few others do all of the above.
One of the others is Dallas Green. He is a Canadian singer/songwriter and is in two bands. His softer, folk side..... City & Colour,
And his harder side, screamo band Alexisonfire (the screamo dude is George Pettit),
I've been cruising around the MTV video site and found this. Last year's AI was pretty much a snooze fest, but I really enjoyed Crystal Bowersox. This is the first single (autobiographical written by Crystal) from her album of the same name. I think I'll be buying a few songs.
More from my Sunday a.m. playlist and hey Aztec Camera and Roddy Frame should not be forgotten! The first vid is their best known hit I think and dated though fun, but their last album, Frestonia, was my favorite - quiet and kind of sweetly quirky. The second vid is Roddy singing a song from Frestonia that I still love - 'On the Avenue.' Give it a chance, he's a bit shaky at the beginning. The studio version is lovely.
SOMEWHERE IN MY HEART - AZTEC CAMERA (Roddy Frame)
And - lest you think I've gone soft - my favorite Robbie Williams song by far. A great song and a fantastic video IMO. And of course theatrical Robbie does a lovely job but I love the girl and rabbit imagery too. (Jonas Akerlund directed)
SEXED UP - ROBBIE WILLIAMS
'You say we're fatally flawed, well I'm easily bored, is that okay? Write me off your list, make this the last kiss..."
With all the joy and flail around the tour ending I've neglected this thread a bit. Am loving all the diversity of music tastes that are showing up. We are an eclectic bunch - musically speaking!
He's my latest addition
Lara Fabian
She is Belgian and a huge star in Europe but almost unknown outside - I have seen her compared to Celine Dion.
From Wikipedia: Lara Fabian (born Lara Crokaert, January 9, 1970) is a Belgian-born international singer who also holds Canadian citizenship. Multilingual, she sings in French, Italian, Spanish, and English, in all of which she is fluent.[citation needed]
She has also sung in Portuguese, and once in Hebrew on Israel's 60th Independence Day celebrations and in German in 1988 for a version of "Croire" (ger.: "glaub" eng.: "believe"), although she speaks neither language fluently. She also speaks a little Dutch (Flemish). She has sold over 18 million records worldwide so far. She is a mezzo-soprano with a two octaves and a sixth vocal range — from G (G3) below middle C (C4) to soprano high F (F6). She can belt to tenor high F (F5).[1][2]
*********
She is the one I would love to hear Adam duet with - their voices have a similar range and power. I have both her english language albums and a couple of her french language albums. Here are a few examples. Enjoy.
I looked through the thread again to see if Jamie had been posted because he seems too good to have been omitted, but I didn't find anything posted.
This is a guy who has been around a while but is pretty new to me. And I am LOVING this skinny, quirky, nerdy looking, British white dude who can sing funk/soul with the best of the Motown greats. He is also extremely creative in the electro/pop genre. I can't help but grin ear to ear with his performances. But most importantly, he can saaang!
In addition to the youtubes, I have included two interviews that include some stellar live performances. I HIGHLY recommend that you take the time to listen.
Another Day
A Little Bit of Feel Good
Wait for Me
Here is an example of his experimental material which seems like performance art to me. I'm not sure how listenable it would be on a regular basis, but it is quite remarkable to watch. He records himself live and keeps dubbing vocal tracks on top of each other. There are no instruments and it is all live and improvised. Very talented guy.
Oh wow, what a treasure trove of a thread!!!!!!!!!!!! Just took a quick peek, and I can tell I'll be spending lots of time here over the coming "quiet" times.
Just wanted to share a couple of songs by an incredible U.K. singer-- Clare Maguire. Her debut album comes out next year. I was introduced to her music by Sunn (@draddee on Twitter).
And y'all should know, I'm fond of angsty stuff... :D
Gorgeous, haunting song and lovely video:
And her cover of the Antony and the Johnson's song "Hope There's Someone" set to the powerful photography of Jim Goldberg:
Now for an old timer trying something new. I never "got" Tom Jones. Really liked some of his music, but never found him sexy. Anyway, someone pointed me to this video a while back. Tom put out a gospel album (I've never cared for gospel music either). That being said, this is hot! From his appearance on Letterman in September.
He still sounds pretty damn good in this recent clip.
I just found this clip of Engelbert and Tom together, with Billy Preston. Love the part where Tom talks about his pants. Anyone want to volunteer to be Adam's two "pants girls"?
You do not have to shout but if you want to chat....

ayleim: Just checking - so there were NO Adam-sightings in the performance show right? Then I don't have to worry about being near the TV later tonight, I can just listen from the kitchen. :D

blueberry: A tech question. When I post, I'm stuck in BB Code, can't get back to Preview. Any ideas? I have Preview as default in my profile, but that doesn't help.

Q3: blueberry. there should be a two labels on tabs at the bottom of the REPLY box -- one labeled Preview and one labeled BBCode. Can you see these or are they gone?
May 19, 2013 2:08:40 GMT -5
blueberry: Q3, I can still see the labels, but when I click on the Preview label, nothing happens. And every time I start a new post, it automatically takes me to BB Code. Otherwise it doesn't matter, but posting pictures would be easier in Preview (copy+paste).
