Working on By The Rules chords. Did this demonstration of those chord boxes I put up for Shady too. I am no Nile Rodgers though [soundcloud]http://soundcloud.com/nationalglampoon/i-throw-more-shade[/soundcloud] Edit: Done with By The Rules! i.imgur.com/XuYLR.png

Nile's guitar adds so much to the overall funk of the track, but it is very subtle in the background. On this audio, I can hear the chords and style upfront, then go back and pick it out more easily on the recording. Thanks.

Another impressive example of vocals. Cool. I was chatting with Angelina recently (who saw your notation of the riff in Broken English BTW and enjoyed reading it). She was puzzled, tho, about people going on and on about him singing the entire phrase in one breath. Said she, and any number of singers she knew could do the same. That it was not extraordinary for Adam either. Sort of like, "What's the big deal?" Me: "But, Angelina, don't you know that people haven't heard something like that before? No other pop singer can do that!" A: "But, Adam is NOT a pop singer. He's a classical singer. Classical singers can do that." She had me laughing at our lack of communication or common reference. In her world, Adam is just singing. Like he should be singing. Like she would expect him to sing, given his background. She recognized, from the first time she saw/heard him on Idol, that he was a classical singer. She hears multiple examples of that classical training all over Trespassing. I, on the other hand, was coming from the pop/rock genre perspective, where the things Adam does are shockingly unusual. Noteworthy. Awesome. Alien. Angelina "gets" Adam. She just "gets" him from a different perspective than most of us. She DOES think he is the best singer she has ever heard, and she has heard the best of the best. But, because of his extensive training and experience in the arts, and because of what she has seen him do, she just expects him to be extraordinary. If that makes any sense. Of course he does that riff in one breath. She wouldn't expect anything different. hahaha

That was interesting cassie! Personally I would say Adam is a rock singer that combines a good solid foundation of classical techniques with some modern techniques. Obviously I can't compete with Angelina's expertise but I come from more of a rocker background and that's how his voice sounds to me. There are other singers in popular music who use the classical technique, but Adam isn't one to limit himself, branching out to the grit techniques, the "banshee" wails, etc. Edit: That was probably one for Vocal Masterclass in retrospect!

Thanks for this. Funny that in print, at first look it doesn't look that amazing. But, that is because the first lines are in the bass clef, and he last one is in the treble clef. When you notice that, and think of the breadth of the range across both clefs, it is most impressive. Just two tones short of three octaves. And it all sounds great.

I've noticed he actually covers more in Sure Fire Winners, but it's not as obvious cause the B2's are deeper in the mix

Just reiterating how much I am LOVING this thread!! nationalglampoon you are incredibly talented yourself to do all this! I love the challenge of working out chords and harmonies etc. but it takes me forever! It can be frustrating at times, but also rewarding! I am missing my piano terribly (long story...it is currently in storage - will be able to have it back in a couple of months - can't wait!) cassie You hit the nail on the head re your comments about Angelina not being amazed at Adam's vocal ability because of his classical training / her expectations etc... compared to the vast majority of us who are coming from a pop/rock background.... His voice still astounds me, and even my opera singer father and other classically-trained singer friends acknowledge his vocal talent. Even tho I was raised with an opera-singer father, and have some classical singing training myself, opera is not my first love - musical theatre is.... along with pop music (was a teenager in the 80's when divas and power ballads were the norm!) When Adam came along for the first time ever, I heard a musical theatre voice singing pop music.... no wonder I was in love!!! It actually took me over a year to make this connection.... Anyway probably waaay off track for this thread.... but thanks again for the hard work and insights here.... may not post that often, but I am a regular lurker! :D

Thanks for the nice words :D It didn't come naturally to me, I just practiced and practiced and practiced. Still not perfect but I'm pretty happy with where I'm at it with it I'll do some more stuff very soon. Not sure what though, any ideas?

Hope this isn't a dying thread cos it's amazing! I have just done something I've been meaning to do for ages, and that is work out the keys for each song on Trespassing. nationalglampoon you may have already done this?!! I have had the feeling for a while that the majority of songs were in minor keys. And I was right. Even most of the upbeat songs are, which I don't think is the norm? Here are the keys as I worked them out: (based on the main key of the first verse after the intro.. not counting modulations) Trespassing: E minor Cuckoo: E flat minor Shady: E flat minor NCOE: C minor (but does change to E flat major I think) Kickin In: B flat major Naked Love: E flat major PTL: C minor BTIKM: G minor Broken English: E flat minor Underneath: E flat minor Chokehold: D flat minor OOL: E flat minor Runnin: D minor Take Back: C minor Nirvana: B major (but for some reason this song feels like it's in a minor key!) By the Rules: D minor Map: G major The reason I find this interesting, is that most upbeat dance songs I would expect to be in major keys (not researched but that is what I would expect) People wondering why Adam's songs are not as successful on radio..... could this be a reason?? Meaning that subconsciously the music is not familiar / comfortable with most radio listeners.... These songs are unbelievably musically sophisticated.... I have a decent musical ear and I suspect that I will find it a challenge to work out the chord progressions by ear for this music.... so again, major respect to you nationalglampoon for the time you have put into this! I would be interested in your thoughts / opinions as musicians likely far more qualified than me!! Thanks!!

Interesting about the minor keys. I wonder what the percentage minor top 40 songs is. Adam does improvise in minor keys extremely well. I was in awe of ROF from AI and listened to it over and over just because I couldn't believe how well a pop/rock singer (Adam, that is) could do the improvs.

Basically a major scale with a flattened 7th, same for Kickin' In (B flat mixolydian) and Broken English (E flat mixolydian). Adam uses that a lot, it's more of a slightly exotic or wacky sound. Really popular in pop music lately actually. Map and Nirvana I'd say are E minor and G sharp minor. BTIKM is very ambiguous but I lean towards major.
