Don't laugh, Talon , but the Remaster 2011 version reminds me of Dragon Attack ;D ...just a flavor/hint here and there .... probably because the tempo seems to be slower compared to the BBC and live versions. Did BM also write DA?
The bass and guitar in BBC sessions were outstanding but nothing can compare to the Live version. Oh my! What a treat. Can't get over it. Creative artists at their best and this is just the beginning.
ETA: Thank you for giving us this opportunity to get to know them in their early creative years and I'm sure the best is yet to come.
Are you sure it's not just the riff that Neil Fairclough put in his bass solo? Yeah the original version is slightly slower than the later versions! The live version though is phenomenal...a lot of energy and spontaneity!
And yes Brian is the writer of Dragon Attack!
Oh we are just getting started...We got a long way to go in this chronology...:)

OK since I am leaving on vacation tomorrow early morning, I figured I'd give you TWO songs today especially since one is really short. This will end the story of the proper first album, Queen. Upon my return I will delve into the miscellaneous tracks recorded at the same time but didn't make the album - including, Mad The Swine (intended for the first album but remained unreleased til MUCH later), Polar Bear (a Smile track, demoed by Queen which remains unreleased), Silver Salmon (another demo from the time period), Feelings (a demo which breaks off of Silver Salmon), and Hangman The great white whale of Queen collectors - a song that was only performed live and while Queen Productions denied an existence of a studio version, one collector does have such an acetate...I don't know if I should do that all in one track since they aren't proper releases...or maybe Mad The Swine is...I'll have to decide...THEN we'll move on to Queen II!
But for today...1/2
Jesus
Written by Freddie Mercury
Musicians: Freddie Mercury - vocals, piano Brian May - acoustic & electric guitars, backing vocals John Deacon - bass guitar Roger Taylor - drums, backing vocals
And then I saw Him in the crowd A lot of people had gathered round Him The beggars shouted the lepers called Him The old man said nothing He just stared about him All going down to see the Lord Jesus All going down to see the Lord Jesus All going down
Then came a man before His feet he fell Unclean said the leper and rang his bell Felt the palm of a hand touch his head Go now go now you're a new man instead All going down to see the Lord Jesus All going down to see the Lord Jesus All going down
It all began with the three wise men Followed a star took them to Bethlehem And made it heard throughout the land Born was a leader of man All going down to see the Lord Jesus All going down to see the Lord Jesus All going down
It all began with the three wise men Followed a star took them to Bethlehem And made it heard throughout the land Born was a leader of man All going down to see the Lord Jesus All going down to see the Lord Jesus All going down
- Freddie explores Christianity here and doesn't comment on it one way or the other - merely tells a story of being a face in the crowd at the time. Still heavier lyrics than most rock bands of the time
- Performed live during the earliest era but dropped from the set early on. No live recordings of the song have survived...or at least they haven't leaked if they have.
- Great choir vocals (as you probably expect by now) But also a great rhythmic march of sorts. Slightly gospel-like but nowhere near where it would go with Freddie!
- This was definitely written while Barry Mitchell was still the bassist and was apparently more acoustic at the time.
The guitar work towards the end goes hand in hand with some power drumming....
ALTERNATIVE RELEASED VERSIONS:
DE LANE LEA DEMO
- Released on the 2011 Island Records remastering of Queen Deluxe Version.
- I prefer the demo! It's longer and features a much heavier Brian guitar as well as an extended solo. Any time you get more Brian, you'll get my approval!
UNRELEASED AND UNHEARD: - Rumors of a "Heavy Version" exist but I have the feeling that is the De Lane Lea Demo.
PERSONAL NOTES:
- This track is a real theatrical rock song. It almost sounds as if it should have been in Jesus Christ Superstar...if JCS had a god on guitar
- It showcases Freddies interest in gospel-type tunes though, something he would later explore further.
OK now for the second! 2/2
Seven Seas Of Rhye...
Written by Freddie Mercury
Musicians: Freddie Mercury - piano Brian May - guitars John Deacon - bass guitar Roger Taylor - drums
INSTRUMENTAL
- I know what you're thinking. WHAT? There are lyrics...I heard Adam sing them! I've heard Queen sing them! Well yes...but you are referring the version from Queen II This version was an instrumental that ended Queen I.
- The gist is that Freddie had half completed the song by the time they were recording it and thought it would be a neat idea if they ended the first album with the song and opened the second album with the full version as if it really was a continuous journey! It didn't quite work out that way as Seven Seas closed Queen II also But the idea was cool.
- This version is a bit slower and very short and sweet like a teaser should be!
ALTERNATIVE RELEASED VERSIONS:
QUEEN II VERSION: SEE QUEEN II
PERSONAL NOTES:
- I'll get into more of a discussion in Queen II, but I would have liked to have seen the tune open II and them go through with the idea...then I could put QUeen adn Queen II in the CD changer and go right through
Up next? Well when I get back I think I will start off by giving Mad The Swine a full entry. Whether the others get a full entry will depend on how I feel at the time. I may combine entries for the miscellaneous entries but some of them may deserve their own...we'll take it as it comes...but Mad The Swine definitely gets it's own...

Have a great trip!! Thanks for all the work. I will be able to catch up now.
If you and others on the list feel perhaps every day is a little intense, i would be happy with a new entry every other day to give just a little more time to listen and compare. What do you all think?
Theosgma - it really is up to you guys. If enough want me to slow down to every other day I'm alright with that.
On the other hand - don't feel the need to rush or skip. If you want to talk about a song from 8 posts back or later on...albums back, I'll still love it and answer whatever questions you may have So listen whenever you can and post about whatever...whenever :D
Thanks for the well wishes!
NG - Yes it is not one of their radio friendly tunes
Hi all, the guy who gave us Hammersmith Day II, went back to his audio and with a new source made a new 3 source mix of Day II. Not a TON different than what I provided previously but it is a better version in someways.

Hammersmith Day II FLAC Version II!
I am good either way. Like to get input from anyone else with a strong opinion. I was also wanting to be sure you were OK with the pace because it is a lot of work. So whatever everyone wants to do I just wanted to verbalize that our format is not cast in stone from my viewpoint. Again, thanks and safe trip.

talon, could you compile all the links to HQ and/or FLAC downloads of the six shows in one post? I'm missing London #3 and Kiev.
ETA: Just realised I torrented London #3 Is there no FLAC version of Kiev? Or a good recording at least 320kb MP3 in stereo? Failing that where can I get the best audio from the broadcast?
Talon, hope you had a wonderful time with your family :D A little bit of hope that may make you happy from Brian May's soapbox - (Currently Budapest nearly finished and Rainbow concerts are in the works)... or is this OLD news for you? ;D www.brianmay.com/brian/brianssb/brianssb.html
**Sat 04 Aug 12** IT'S NOT THAT SIMPLE...
[In reply to question whether 70s concerts could be made available on DVD - see LETTERS]
... It's not that simple.
I suppose it would be fine if we just shoved the contents of an old VHS video on a DVD, but everybody would immediately complain about the lack of quality.
Instead, our guys regard each possible new DVD as a challenge … and they spend many months on each one, researching the best undiscovered sources, compiling, repairing, restoring - sound and vision - and the result is always something very special.
Currently Budapest is nearly finished, but the Rainbow concerts are in the works too. I don't know what you mean by 'second time' for the Budapest show … it's certainly never been officially on DVD before, because we had to buy the rights and buy the actually film in order to make this DVD.
The simple answer is … we can only do so much.
But thanks for asking. We also think some of the early concerts are interesting to reclaim.
Hi all! Driving back from out vacation now...well the wife is anyways. So I thought I'd pop in on my phone . Tomorrow I'll start class up again :p
TG. I'm very comfortable at the pace I'm going and if it gets to be too much, I'll slow down then .
ileanne - Welcome! Any question you have at any time will be answered...feel free to interrupt the current song/discussion for a different question of comment on an older song
NG - I dont believe a FLAC showed up for Kidv. When I get home I will post a link to the best I found.
Gabby - thanks for the news! I did see it but it is exciting. Budapest is only mildly exciting. It wa out on VHS back in the day but it will be a nice bluray . Rainbow though! That will get Queen fans excited. I do wonder if Brian had a brain fart though and meant Hammersmith since that was mentioned previously. I do like that he said concert(S) though. The Rainbow gigs from 1974 would be amazing as there hasn't been that much that surfaced of the first of the Rainbow gigs! Hammersmith though would be great too! 1975 is famous but 1979 is considered one of the greatest Queen gigs ever! I would live to get then in high quality :D

blueberry: A tech question. When I post, I'm stuck in BB Code, can't get back to Preview. Any ideas? I have Preview as default in my profile, but that doesn't help.

Q3: blueberry. there should be a two labels on tabs at the bottom of the REPLY box -- one labeled Preview and one labeled BBCode. Can you see these or are they gone?
May 19, 2013 2:08:40 GMT -5
blueberry: Q3, I can still see the labels, but when I click on the Preview label, nothing happens. And every time I start a new post, it automatically takes me to BB Code. Otherwise it doesn't matter, but posting pictures would be easier in Preview (copy+paste).
